Portraits – We Keep It Classic, A Style That Never Dates

Since 2008, Tomato Photo’s portrait style had been people focused, classic, simple, natural and beautiful. Our focus is always you, your family and your children.

Keeping it Simple, or KIS principle that we call it.

It is important to recognise the beauty in every person that we photograph and with decade of experience, we learn how to work with our clients to draw out their best.

One of the reason why we do well is perhaps, I love meeting people, I am intrigued by kid’s curiosity, their behaviour, why they do what they do. I observe, I pre-empt and I anticipate. That’s how I get to to capture the moments and expressions that parents didn’t know existed. It surprise me from time to time as well, as creating images is more or less like a second nature, such as breathing…

We had such a fantastic experience with Hart – he was so relaxed and easy going and the session was really enjoyable. My husband and I were amazed at how quickly our very shy 2 years old warm up to him. We are absolutely thrilled with the quality of the images and would highly recommend. Danelle Slattery

I find beauty in people’s laughter, expression, body language, connection, etc. I learn all that from comments from my clients… they often say something like, oh… that is so her! oh, i love that “look” and I love when they do this…

In fact, my photography skill grow every time I listen to my clients. Capturing what they hope to remember drive me to the pursuit of images beyond thought. It is that simple.

Mother and child

We find value in simplicity and it is a classic example of how we create our images.

Most clients tell us that there is something in our photos that they like but not quite sure what… They feel comfortable looking at the photos, they can relate and they look real. We presume what they mean is that’s how their happiness “feel” like.

Its life little things that makes people smile more than biggest ticket item that money can buy.

Family Portraits: Why It’s Worthwhile

family_photography_singapore

Your Family, Your Story:

Your life as a family is like a story book. A day a page, a month, chapter, and a year in a volume.

Storybook of your family should contain beautiful images of your family so everyone remember how they look at that particular time of their life.

Photos can powerfully depict the ties of each family member and the strong bond that they share. Our parent’s generation might not have taken as many photos as this leaves many of us in the lurch when it comes to reflecting on our childhood visually or recalling important memories from events captured in film.  The one of the great wonders of our new generation is the access we have to cameras and technology, all of this makes us less apprehensive about getting in front of the camera and allowing a photographer to shoot away our precious family portrait.

We focus on the all important moments of your modern day family.   Captured digitally are the moments shared between loved ones.  With a focus on fun moments, this is the perfect opportunity to get shots done that reflect your family in its truest form

What People LOVE in Their Life Story book?

My clients often tell us that they love picture that is natural. Something simple, but simple often is the hardest thing to achieve. People say, I want candid photo, what do they mean by candid? are they suppose to do something for the camera? if yes, what to do? If they do it, it become contrive and being contrive is one of the big no no and clients hate it.

When your kids are under 3, their little silly face is cute, adorable and we certainly love those images, however, same silly face when they are 9 or 10 years old, probably something that we want to avoid. In short, clients love images that is that is simple, natural and images that is age appropriate.

We believes that by allowing children to just be themselves and engage with them as they play naturally allow great images to be captured of your little ones.

Here are the main reasons that families choose to get family photos done:

Every family want to feel proud of their family. A beautifully captured family portrait is often a mean to show those proud moment

Secondly, Family want something tangible to show their children’s growth.

Beautifully capture images offer parents an opportunity to stop the moment as we all know that time waits for noone, as the kids get bigger; or the parents getting older.

Whilst you plan to get your own family portraits done annually, let’s also remember to invite the grandparents to join in the shots; or organise everyone to do an extended family portrait.

After all, many of your parents are providers for you when you were younger; care-givers of your children; it is even more important if they live overseas.

Displaying tangible form of family photo on the walls of your home sends a strong message to your family and everyone who enters your home that your family means more to me than anything else in the world.

All you have to do is ask someone what he or she would grab if their house were on fire.  I’m sure most people you ask would say their family photos. Family portraits frame freeze important parts of our lives that often remind us why we work, love and live.

Hart could capture the genuine smiles and expressions on my kids’ faces, and that was what is important for me. The photo shoot was spontaneous and family-directed, i.e. you get the photos that YOU want. – Denise Rachel Yong

Lovely photos we had. Hart was actively engaged with my girls and both my hubby and I do not need to even “control” them. he totally had them under his control. And he really responded back with the photos taken so fast within 48 hours. – Sal Tan

Hart took photos of our family recently, and we were so impressed with his great demeanor and artistic eye. He is great with kids, and he even managed to get our 18 month old grumpy baby to crack a few smiles. Each setting he picked for the photos was really lovely. Very happy with our experience! – Lisa Blackard

Tomato Photo Family Photography Studio – 2019 in Review

Wow, it is already the middle of February 2020. Didn’t we just ring in the New Year recently!?

It is definitely one of the most repeated clichés but time really flies!

Looking Back At 2019 – Tomato Photo Family Photography Studio

Looking back on a rather productive 2019, we photographed just under 300 Families in total!

Some big, some small, some were familiar faces, others were new, but all of them received some beautiful and lasting memories that they can look back on for years to come.

We are ever so grateful to be a part of that milestone for these families!

Top 3 Requests For Family Photoshoots – Tomato Photo Family Photography Studio

You might be curious Why Do Family Photoshoots? The answer is a simple one. Everyone want some form of tangible memories in their lives. We noticed a few trends over the past year when it comes to photographing families. Many had reached the point of no excuses for further procrastination. Hence, perhaps the proliferation of the following requests.

  1. Extended Family Portraits
  2. Focus on Aged Parents and Grandkids
  3. Nuclear Family Portraits During Extended Big Family Photoshoots

1. Big Extended Family Portraits

More and more of our clients seem to be interested in getting EVERYONE (and we mean everyone!) together for the professional family portrait photos in studio.

This rise in multi-generational, big family shoots where you have everyone from the grandparents to their grandkids and their families participating is great because this is exactly why we moved to a bigger studio space that can accommodate up to 35 pax, in a wheelchair-friendly location!

2. Aged Parents & Great/Grandkids

During the shoots, there is also a popular request for us to focus on the grandmother and grandfather of the family. Be it in the form of their couple portraits, some images with them and their grandkids, or the individual portraits.

Regarding the latter, it is good to see that more family members are planning ahead to get these done professionally so that when the time comes, and it will – no one lives forever, they will never have to worry about searching high and low for a good quality digital photo of the mother or father!

Case in point, a lovely lady named Sally whose father passed away right on the eve of Chinese New Year. Unfortunately, she did not have a recent nor good photograph of her late dad. After literally running around town trying to find a studio to help with the editing process, she got in touch with us and we did our best to help out.

On the other hand, Hart’s grandfather passed away earlier on in January but thankfully, they had updated the family photos just last year so that was one less thing to worry about.

We really should not take time for granted….

3. Nuclear Family Portraits During Extended Big Family Photoshoots

We also find that during the big family portrait shoots, family members do value having some of their own immediate family portraits taken.

That makes total sense.

If everyone has taken the time and made the effort to come down for the family photography session in studio, why not focus a little on your own nuclear family and your kids at the same time, right?

What’s New?

  1. Outdoor Mini Photoshoot Sessions
  2. Newborn Photography Introductory Workshops
  3. Finally! Easing Into Our Own Studio Space

1. Outdoor Mini Photoshoot Sessions

In 2019, we re-introduced our Outdoor Mini-Photoshoot specials again after 9 long years, which so many of you have loved and found useful!

We wanted to make it easier for young, busy parents with young kids to capture precious memories before the little ones grow up!

To make it even more accessible, we further extended the special to include our studio (for those of you who prefer an indoor shoot) along with the other options of East Coast Park, Gardens by the Bay or the colourful shophouses along Koon Seng Road!

These affordable, quick sessions are available every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and typically do not last more than 20 minutes. Having said that, should your shoot require more time, Hart will certainly take the time to create the images he has promised.. that’s our guarantee!

Ultimately, we want you to have some beautiful photos.

Tip: Grandparents or primary caregivers are also welcome to bring along the grandkids if parents are unable to take time off from work.

2. Newborn Photography Introductory Workshops – Tomato Photo

Last December, we also started a few “Newborn Photography Introductory Workshops”. These are quick weeknight group sessions with Hart where he shares an overview of what it is like to become a newborn photographer, what to expect, how to start etc. The big picture, so to speak! This is perfect for avid photographers who are thinking of embarking into the professional arena yet unsure what to expect.

The introductory workshops also serve as a good stepping stone to the full, in-depth 1 day photography course that we are planning sometime this year.

3. Home Sweet Home – Finally Easing Into Our Own Studio Space

Tomato Photo has been around since 2008, but last year was the first year we spent in our own purposed built studio space in Ubi. It feels like we have been here much longer! We are so glad we made the move to accommodate bigger families, and family members with mobility concerns. Plus, there is always great comfort in owning your own space, right?

To conclude, we would like to say to all our clients THANK YOU for your trust and support in 2019. We are so glad you chose us, and we hope to continue working together with all of you and create new memories whenever you are keen!

Here are some of our favourite images created in 2019.. and our “Best Nine” posts on Instagram in 2019.

Enjoy!

5 Reasons For Doing A Pet Family Photoshoot in Studio or On-Location

Over my long career of photographing families, the term pet family photoshoot kept popping up.

Maybe because Pet Photography has established itself as another genre of its own and the thought of combining pet photography and family photography started to manifest itself.

I have had many families asking me if they can include their pet dog or cats in their Family Portrait Session. The answer would definitely be “Sure! Bring them along!!!”

Not only are your dogs a huge part of your family, they are also one of your key members. They are companions, they are playmates, they have strong bond to the family members. They certainly add to the dynamics to any family shoot.

I got to learn about the term ‘fur kid’ only couple of years ago through an incoming email asking if I welcome ‘fur kids’. That was when I had to google to find out what it meant… LOL..

The only pet I had was having and breeding lots of fish when I was a kid. Running around drains catching worms to feed my large supply of fishes. As I left home to further my studies in Australia, I kept an eastern long neck turtle.

Looking back, it seems that the type of pets I have seem to be scaly water type pets. I haven’t had a furry type of pet like a dog, cat, rabbit or guinea pig before. So, the term ‘Fur kid’ just didn’t resonate at that point of time.

Nevertheless, as I began to photograph more couples or families with pet dogs or cats, I began to sense the deep connection between the pets, the baby and the family.

The interaction between the baby and the dog are clearly phenomenal…. almost like best buddies.

The laughter and excitement sparkles on the children’s eyes as they interact with their favorite pooch. These interactions are so natural that it helps any photographer capture that perfect shot in any pet family photoshoot. Furthermore, a pet is a great photographers assistant as they relax the environment and create love and connection between the family.

So here is the top 5 reasons why you should be doing your next family shoot with your pet in our studio, at your home or on-location.

1. They are part of your family.

Let’s face it, way before you have your own child, your pet is very much part of you and when the baby came along, you introduce the baby to your pet just like you introduce your baby to the rest of the family and extended family. You love your pet and they are part of your family.

2. You want to remember them.

Humans will out live their pet. Dog’s life is rather short, we make comparison of 1 year in dog’s life is very much about 7 of human’s. So by the time they reach 5-6 years old, they are mature and some what less active as we saw in some of the breed.

While we celebrate our life, we want to make sure every part of our life is being captured, that include your pet. After 10 years of photographing thousands of families, I can always feel the sadness when they point out the pets that they used to have and lost them because of old age.

3. Kids love to play with them.

One of the way to get the kiddo to be engaged for the duration of the family photo shoot is to introduce their pets. They love them and you know kids’ love are boundless and I love watch them play, I love the connection that they share and I love they treat their pet just like their best buddies.

Be sure to have those captured and have them for your kiddo when they grow up. Sometimes, the pet understand the child more than we do and they often cheer up the child. So bring your pets for the next family photoshoot.

4. You love them as much as your own child.

You know deep down, they hold that special place in your heart when it comes to pet. They don’t talk back, they are there to cuddle with you when you are sad, spending time with you when you are alone and they are faithful to you as their family too. Perhaps you have told them secrets that you never told anyone because pets are the best at keeping your secret because they don’t share the same language as human.

5. It is part of your children’s memories.

It is especially true if you had your first child and there is no one else… just mummy, daddy, me and my pet. This is a shared bond and love between them.

Have it for your child… after all having your family photoshoot done with your pet is an activity that promotes bonding and connection. It is a perfect activity when it comes to having the memories that can be passed down to your child.

Warm and cosy studio with more than sufficient props. No pushy sales tactic, just go in, get comfy and start shooting. Hart was really accommodating with our pets and his finger was quick to capture the shots before our pets started getting fidgety. I would highly recommend pets/kids shoot with him as he is super patient and easy-going.

Hart was super understanding and he knew how to grab the attention of my 2 little nieces during our family shoot. He also managed to capture some great shots of our energetic Jack Russell Terrier in his studio as well! Its our first time doing a family photo shoot with him and definitely will not be the last.

5 Different Styles of Newborn Photoshoot In Tomato Photo Studio Singapore

These days, there are a myriad different styles of newborn photography in the market. It is simply overwhelming just to scroll through the various style of newborn photoshoots.

The shoot styles range from posed newborn photoshoots (in it includes various styles, from minimal props to heavily propped; from as is photos to digitally enhanced with digital backdrops) versus the ‘unposed’, connection type lifestyle newborn photoshoots.

Whilst we can’t speak for all the styles of newborn photography, we can talk a little bit about the styles we do here at Tomato Photo. And we usually do these 5 styles in one newborn session.

1.  Posed vs Lifestyle: Know Your Expectations

There are essentially two types of newborn photography – posed/studio & lifestyle.  I love both for different reasons.  However, it is important to know what type are envisioning for your shoot.

Perfectly Posed Pics- typically must be done within the first 10 days of birth when the baby is very sleepy and “mold-able”.  The focus in this type of session is on shots of the baby looking perfect, usually in blankets, wraps, hats, & headbands.  Tomato’s signature style of newborn photography envision the newborn to look like in mummy’s tummy and shows only the baby against the dark background, their expressions and their foetal position. Minimal props are used.

2.  Let the Baby Inspire the shoot…

The best images are unplanned and inspired by the uniqueness of each baby.  Whether it is cute dimples, big beautiful eyes, full lips, or a great head of hair, try to highlight the beauty of the baby.

We will work with you as the parents to ensure that we capture those amazing moments and unique features of your baby to ensure your memories last a life time.

At Tomato Photo we believe that this its all about being in the moment.  This means that we give the newborn time and space to  move, yawn, and stretch.  Babies have wonderful, perfect, sweet movements.

3.  Include the Mum, The Family..

Mothers work the hardest and they love the hardest too.  Mum is always behind the camera taking snaps of every adorable moment of your baby.

This is an important opportunity to get in front of the lens and capture those shots that define and outline your love for your newborn.

Get close, cuddle and aw at your little one as the photographer snaps away.  Don’t by shy this is your opportunity to shine too.

Let us know and we can assist you to plan your make up and hair for the shoot as we know that new mums are too busy to worry about such pesky issues.

4.  Include The Siblings

If your newborn has a proud older brother or sister, its a great idea to incorporate them into the shoot.  Its always a good idea to have the older sibling ready to go first.  This means that we can photograph the sibling while they are excited and able to concentrate.

Once we have some great individual shots of the sibling, we then let them go play while we focus the session on the newborn. Toddlers simply don’t have the attention span to sit quietly and wait while the newborn or setup for each shot.

Once we have great shots of the newborn we can bring the toddler back in again towards the end of the shoot for shots of the siblings together.

5.  Enjoy the experience – Connections

A session with your newborn should not be stressful or exhausting, but rather a bonding experience for the family.

We will give you plenty of time and space to feed, change and burp your baby.  A relaxed Mummy means that the baby will be more receptive.  We encourage Mum and Dad to simply take a seat on the sofa and relax while we photograph your newborn in the setting and style that you envision.
