Hart Tan, Master Photograher (AMPA, LBIPP UK)

More Than A Photographer

Hart Tan was born on Bintan Island, Indonesia, and spent his childhood in the small town of Tanjung Pinang before eventually moving to Sydney, Australia.

After a decade in Australia, Hart and his wife made the decision to return to Singapore following the loss of his younger brother to aplastic anaemia. At the same time, his mother was battling Motor Neuron Disease.

Those years were some of the most challenging of his life.

He was caring for his family, expecting his first child, building a business from the ground up, and learning first-hand how precious time with loved ones can be.

The experience shaped how he sees family.

And perhaps more importantly, why he photographs them.

Today, Hart often says that hope is the beginning of happiness. It is a philosophy that continues to guide both his life and his work.

Since founding Tomato Photo, Hart has dedicated himself to helping families preserve moments that cannot be recreated later.

Not because photographs are important.

But because the people in them are.

The Ability To Read The Room

Clients often describe him as easy-going and approachable. He has a natural sense of humour that helps adults relax and quickly wins over even the shyest children.

At the same time, Hart possesses a strong sense of situational awareness.

He instinctively reads the room – sensing when energy dips, when grandparents need a break, when children need space, or when the family simply needs a different approach.

This ability allows him to navigate even the most complex family dynamics with confidence and ease, particularly during large multi-generational sessions.

Because a successful family portrait is rarely about getting everyone to cooperate.

It is about guiding every generation, all at the same time, with calm, clarity and experience.

And when families feel that everything is under control, they are free to focus on what matters most: Being Together.

Experience Across Generations

Few photographers have the privilege of witnessing families grow over time.

Over the past 18 years, Hart has photographed newborn babies taking their first family portrait, toddlers full of curiosity, teenagers preparing to leave home, newlyweds starting families of their own, and grandparents celebrating milestones surrounded by children and grandchildren.

Some families have returned year after year.

Children Hart first photographed as babies and young children have since grown into teenagers and young adults. In some cases, they now stand taller than their parents in the very photographs that once captured them as toddlers.

Having witnessed thousands of family stories unfold, Hart understands that every stage carries its own significance.

♦️ A baby’s first year.

♦️ A graduation.

♦️ A family reunion.

♦️ A grandparent’s milestone birthday.

♦️The gathering that took months to coordinate.

These moments may appear ordinary at the time, yet often become the photographs families treasure most years later.

This perspective allows Hart to photograph not just how a family looks today, but what this particular chapter of their lives may one day mean to them.

One Photographer. Every Image.

Every image on this website was photographed by Hart.

The photographer whose work convinced you to enquire is the same photographer who will photograph your family.

For many families, that certainty matters.

Qualifications & Professional Credentials

Over the years, Hart has built a reputation not only as a family photographer, but also as an educator, speaker and respected professional within the photography industry.

Hart is an accredited Master Photographer, a distinction awarded to photographers who demonstrate exceptional technical and professional standards. He is also a member of VICPA, an official affiliated association under the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).

In addition, Hart is a Licensed Singapore Tourist Guide, combining professional photography expertise with in-depth local knowledge of Singapore’s history, culture and landmarks.

His work has been recognised through industry awards, speaking engagements and media features, and trusted by families from Singapore and around the world.

Beyond photography, Hart has also been actively involved in community and charitable initiatives since 2008, believing that success is most meaningful when shared with others.

Yet despite the qualifications, titles and accolades, families rarely remember Hart for any of these.

They remember how he made them feel.

Calm.

Reassured.

Taken care of.

Confident that everything is under control.

Trusting that the experience promised is the experience delivered.

Because long after awards are forgotten, the experience remains.

Beyond Singapore

Singapore is one of the world’s most international cities, and over the years Hart has had the privilege of photographing families from all walks of life.

Alongside local Singaporean families, many of his clients are expatriate families who have made Singapore home, whether for a few years or several decades.

Others return to Singapore to reunite with extended family members, celebrate milestones, or document an important chapter of their lives together.

Having grown up in Indonesia, lived in Australia and built his career in Singapore, Hart is comfortable working across different cultures, personalities and family dynamics.

He communicates fluently in English, Mandarin and Bahasa Indonesia, and can also converse in several Chinese dialects. This often helps grandparents, parents and children feel equally included during a session.

More recently in 2026, Hart became a Licensed Singapore Tourist Guide, further deepening his understanding of Singapore’s history, culture and neighbourhoods.

Whether photographing a local family, an expatriate family calling Singapore home, or visitors creating memories during their time here, Hart’s approach remains unchanged:

To create natural, meaningful portraits that families will continue to value for years to come.
