Details – Home Newborn Photography

Little newborn baby is full of details. How they curl, how they fold, the little pouchy lips, their little feet are always interesting to me.

I tend to squeeze in a few shots showing those, however, my vision of newborn photography has always be to showcase how the baby looks like in the womb. An unique way to really preserve those moment that is unreproduceable and a precious way to remember that little baby of yours.

Portraits – We Keep It Classic, A Style That Never Dates

Since 2008, Tomato Photo’s portrait style had been people focused, classic, simple, natural and beautiful. Our focus is always you, your family and your children

Keeping it Simple, or KIS principle that we call it.

It is important to recognise the beauty in every person that we photograph and with decade of experience, we learn how to work with our clients to draw out their best.

One of the reason why we do well is perhaps, I love meeting people, I am intrigued by kid’s curiosity, their behaviour, why they do what they do. I observe, I pre-empt and I anticipate. That’s how I get to to capture the moments and expressions that parents didn’t know existed. It surprise me from time to time as well, as creating images is more or less like a second nature, such as breathing…

We had such a fantastic experience with Hart – he was so relaxed and easy going and the session was really enjoyable. My husband and I were amazed at how quickly our very shy 2 years old warm up to him. We are absolutely thrilled with the quality of the images and would highly recommend. Danelle Slattery

I find beauty in people’s laughter, expression, body language, connection, etc. I learn all that from comments from my clients… they often say something like, oh… that is so her! oh, i love that “look” and I love when they do this…

In fact, my photography skill grow every time I listen to my clients. Capturing what they hope to remember drive me to the pursuit of images beyond thought. It is that simple.

Mother and child

We find value in simplicity and it is a classic example of how we create our images.

Most clients tell us that there is something in our photos that they like but not quite sure what… They feel comfortable looking at the photos, they can relate and they look real. We presume what they mean is that’s how their happiness “feel” like.

Its life little things that makes people smile more than biggest ticket item that money can buy.

3rd timing engaging Hart to take our family photos. He has a knack for engaging the children and makes them at ease during the photography session, so the photos turn out GREAT. We always look forward to receiving the final product (photo edit and the prints)! 😊

Worked with Hart for the first time this month for a newborn and family shoot. Hart was able to communicate with my toddler who cooperated on posing photos with us and our newborn. The photos that came out were really nice, candid, and professional - everything that we expected from the shoot. The session also was not draggy and everything was done quickly with really good photos. The photos were also well edited quickly and we received the preview within a day. Thank you Hart!

Hart is just brilliant with kids. He’s able to engage and quickly make the kids feel comfortable with him, that they actually follow instructions… most of the time. He’s also extremely gentle with newborns and gives you every confidence he knows what he is doing. The result? Amazing family photos!

Did a multi-generation shoot of 25pax with Hart, a seemingly daunting task that Hart handled with such ease. He gave us time to relax and settle, and took effort to know each of us so he could suggest placements and positions. He is deft at handling kids, bringing out their natural smiles, and patiently coaxed a crying toddler into smiles. He may not be the cheapest but he brings out the best of the subjects, through a very enjoyable experience.

Hart strives to know your preference and style right from the beginning which is great as it helps clients to envisage the type of outcome they would like to achieve. The entire experience was fast, smooth and comfortable as you would expect from a very experienced photographer. Importantly, the outcome is awesome and is something I would cherish for many years to come. Thanks Hart!

A Mums reflection …

As parents we are caught in this constant mental and emotional state of wanting our children to grow up so that we can see all of their achievements and then on the other hand wanting them to remain small and child like forever needing their parents.  Its this constant conundrum that we go back and fourth with that keeps us on our toes as parents.

Its for this reason that I love being a photographer.  I recently met with one of my clients who is pregnant for the second time and with this pregnancy she finds herself reflecting over and over again her firsts newborns photos.  She uses these images to try and imagine what it will be like welcoming this new baby in the family dynamic and how much she loved those first few months of bonding with her first.

This is how powerful family imagery is, it brings back raw emotions of being a parent to a newborn and it creates the perfect moment of sweet reflection and excitement for the impending future arrival.

The client revealed that reflecting back on those first newborn photos made her proud as a mother, how much she had accomplished and how much more confident she felt for the arrival of this new baby.  She even mentioned that she is looking forward to the next newborn shoot as she feels so much more relaxed about the whole experience of motherhood. With a witty joke she comment that “you always have to do for the second what you did for the first.”  Another reason that I love my job – just that the returning clients who come back and show me their new and extended family

Happy growing families are my inspiration and I can’t wait to meet this new arrival as I have so many before.” Time flies” I reminded my client, enjoy this second pregnancy and see you soon.

Natural Light vs Flash for Children Photography

Natural light is soft, beautiful and it is free. I spend majority of my professional life dedicated to shoot natural light… that was before I understand flash photography.

As much as I love the soft quality of the natural light, in Singapore, it is very challenging to be depended upon for indoor session. It is always rainy or cloudy. Plus with the movement of the baby, it makes pin sharp images become stressful at times.

With even purpose built natural light studio like one I have, I have to control the direction of the natural light using different flag and reflector to get it right. The worst is when you are ready, the cloud just move and cover the sun… great!!! working with natural light limit my shooting time… so for client’s benefit, I started to control the light using flash with help from my great Mentor who show me beyond how to set light, but how to “feel” with light.

I started to understand how to change the light to enhance my vision and i feel this is a new beginning for me… it was not easy at first…

I try to create soft and flat images for the little baby as requested by the parent, here is one with natural light and one with flash, personally, I like the flash version better and I think the baby agree with me too… 🙂

I use ISO 100 instead of 800 and shoot at smaller aperture at the same shutter speed, so the result is sharper and the image is a lot more crisp and it print a lot better. With all of my work are printed, flash is the way to go for me and I can control it the way I wanted. The first is with natural light and the second is with flash.

Interestingly, I read about the comparison that a great OZ photographer, Sue Bryce on the testing as well… here is the small video on youtube by Creative Live… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-o2wlNkr108
