Home newborn session with chubby bub…

It is always something that prevent us to spend time and preserve memories especially for the little newborn.

Mother always feel that they are not ready, after all, they just had the baby, tired and a lot of uncertainty going on with the little baby. Karen felt the same too… However, there are only so little time to ensure that the best images are captured.

It is a misconception that parents have to do a lot during the newborn session, actually quite the opposite. I tend play an important role, I am the photographer, as well as the main person who is handling the baby right from feeding, cleaning, settling the baby… After hundreds of newborn session, I know newborn like the back of my hand.

Karen is glad that I pushed her to do the session earlier and of course, all products are done within 2 weeks in time for their celebration. Tomato Photo is one of the few studios that offer a very fast turn around time for clients.

Here are some images I capture during the newborn photography session at client’s home.

It is always nice to know that client is really happy with their choice of having Tomato Photo as their trusted partner in preserving their memories…

a happy newborn photography customer, a happy me.

Newborn stage is extremely short and there is always a lot of hurdle for parents need to go through to convince themselves to have newborn photography done.

Jimmy and Joanne was worried too… but of course, they are rewarded with a memory of a lifetime and I think my mission, to create a personalise artwork that part of their memory, is completed.

This image replaces one of their painting collection at home.

You can read more on Joanne’s thought on her blog.

Newborn Photography with Amy

I was in awe when i walk in the beautiful home for a newborn photography assignment. Amy loves photography and has a collection of her beautiful travel photography on the main wall in the living room.

As an avid photographer, Amy do get worried that they wouldn’t get good shots of baby and everyone. Weird angles, too stiff, etc, but I am glad that she says “somehow every single photo was lovely and captured everyone well” and that is a nice compliment for my work.

I asked Amy what was her favorite experience during the session and I was told that it was “the quiet time with baby-only shots. It was so cozy in the room with the white noise machine and seeing our little critter in a new light”.

I try to create a “mood” in my images by knowing how client “feel” and also predict the precise “moments” that a photograph being make. There is always an instant that makes the image looks different. If shutter was pressed several milliseconds too quickly, it didn’t have the magic and if the shutter was pressed several milliseconds too slow, the peak “moments” are lost… anticipation through how you feel as an image maker gives you the ability to judge that precise moment.

Last but not least… here is Amy’s kind words:

Hart is amazing with the baby (and, of course, lovely with the adults too) — she seemed to calm down and do exactly what he wanted under his direction.

Studio Newborn Photography with See Mun

I often ask myself, could a photographer create a style that is different from the current style and co-exist? I am not sure… so I created something that is still my style but added more “elements” to it. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but hey, I love them…

I really enjoy the whole process, conceptualization, shopping, styling and posing the newborn and somehow make everything fit in nicely. It doesn’t come naturally at first so it takes a while to figure out the details.

Process of booking a photographer always a daunting task and it isn’t always easy. There are a lot in the market but nonetheless, I am giving my client everything I have when they booked me… so this is what my clients has to say:

1/ Biggest fear of booking: Mishandling of baby, misbehaving of elder brother…
Did not happen – Hart was so gentle and patient with baby.. and understanding too despite having to wait while we nurse baby 3x!! Hart was also able to deal with the elder brother.. even tho he tried to disrupt the photo taking session at times.. but Hart managed to turn it around and got the elder brother to do interesting poses with baby instead..

2/ what was the most enjoyable part of the session: seeing how the 2 brothers are posing for the photos together. Heart warming to see that the photos taken captured the pure and true brotherly love…

3/ One of the feedback from a friend (who actually attended one of your teaching sessions!) when i told her i am going for your session is that “wow, Hart’s charges are the most expensive in Singapore!”. I had to agree! But.. to me, these images are priceless.. capture a moment in time which can never be brought back.. so if you can afford it, you should go for it! Time will never turn back – these moments will be gone forever if you miss it… what better than to leave them in images that you will treasure forever!

Shooting newborn photography with Hasselblad MF

Hasselblad is always the name associated with high end photography as far as the medium format photography. I don’t see many photographers using the system and I see none in Singapore who specialises in Newborn Photography.

I am always intrique with how the tool will help me to realize my vision as a photographer…

The camera focus really slowly, but I love the huge viewfinder which allow me to manual focus at ease. The tonality (meaning from transition between white to black) is simply amazing furthermore. with sensor almost twice larger then the Professional Full Frame DSLR, gives amazing details. It prints really well, and majority of my work end up with either fine art print or fine art canvas for their detail reproduction. The result simply surpass any FF DSLR as far as tonality goes.

The drawback of the system is, it is extremely expensive, it is heavy and it is slow… but final results often make me forget about the cost of owning the system.

All images below were taken using the Medium format system except the last one which is the FF DSLR. It almost make the last image looks rather “flat” as compared to the rest. Its nice… but I prefer to be able to use the best tool for the job.

Hart
