It’s important to remember that family portrait photographs are a means of story telling. Photos can powerfully depict the ties of each family member and the strong bond that they share. Our parent’s generation might not have taken as many photos as this leaves many of us in the lurch when it comes to reflecting on our childhood visually or recalling important memories from events captured in film. The one of the great wonders of our new generation is the access we have to cameras and technology, all of this makes us less apprehensive about getting in front of the camera and allowing a photographer to shoot away our precious family portrait.
Tomato Photo focuses on the all important candid moments of our modern day family. Captured digitally are the moments shared between loved ones. With a focus on fun moments, this is the perfect opportunity to get shots done that reflect your family in its truest form. Photos that are too posed leaved parents feel awkward and kids that are impossible to control and get to sit still for each shot. Hart Tan from Tomato Photo believes that by allowing children to just be themselves and engage with them as they play naturally he can capture the best pictures of your little ones.
Here are the main reasons that families choose to get family photos done.
Firstly they want to show their family off and swell with pride when visitors comment on the wall hangings. A legacy perhaps to show that the people in it existed as a family.
Secondly they physical documentation of your child’s growth and maturity and lastly and we feel most importantly is preserving the precious memories of your little ones childhood.
Time seems to fly by and this gives mums and dads the opportunity to stop for a moment and capture these precious moments before the kids get bigger; or the parents getting older. Whilst we plan to get our own family portraits done periodically, let’s also remember to invite the grandparents to join in the shots; or organise everyone to do an extended family portrait.
After all, many of our parents are providers for us when we were younger; care-givers of our children; or ‘facetime’ grandparents for those who live apart from the grandkids.
Tomato Photo believes that displaying family photography on the walls of your home sends a strong message to your family and everyone who enters your home that my family means more to me than anything else in the world. All you have to do is ask someone what he or she would grab if their house were on fire. I’m sure most people you ask would say their family photos. Family portraits frame freeze important parts of our lives that often remind us why we work, love and live.

Hart could capture the genuine smiles and expressions on my kids’ faces, and that was what is important for me. The photo shoot was spontaneous and family-directed, i.e. you get the photos that YOU want. – Denise Rachel Yong
Lovely photos we had. Hart was actively engaged with my girls and both my hubby and I do not need to even “control” them. he totally had them under his control. And he really responded back with the photos taken so fast within 48 hours. – Sal Tan
Hart took photos of our family recently, and we were so impressed with his great demeanor and artistic eye. He is great with kids, and he even managed to get our 18 month old grumpy baby to crack a few smiles. Each setting he picked for the photos was really lovely. Very happy with our experience! – Lisa Blackard
Top 8 locations For Outdoor Family Photoshoots
After living in the Garden City, Singapore for the past 11 years, I can’t help but appreciate the vast amount of greenery in the country. From the time you land in Singapore Changi Airport travelling towards the city. The rows and rows of trees along the highway; along the roads, pavements. You are bound to see greenery everywhere. Even when you are on the high rise having a birds eye view from the top of the buildings, one would usually see the canopy of green and the hidden pavements and roads underneath. Singapore’s vision of building a city in a garden is truly realised!
There are so much transformation in Singapore that we need to keep up on where to do outdoor photoshoots because the landscape changes all the time. For those of you who only got to know about Tomato Photo, Tomato Photo started in 2008 from a tiny little corner of a bedroom and primarily photographed kids and families outdoors or at clients’ home. It was a year later in 2009 that we had a studio. We are still shooting as many outdoor and studio shoots today.
Why Do Outdoor Photoshoots?
Many clients who visit Singapore temporarily as tourists or work/live here for a short period of time would usually opt for outdoor photoshoots to have some form of memories of Singapore captured during their short stay in Singapore.
The other group of clients who opt for outdoor photoshoots are usually families who had done multiple studio milestone sessions in the past when their kids were younger. Now that the kids are bigger and more independent, parents would like to have pictures taken in the environment that the kids frequent and love roaming around their favourite parks during their childhood.
Whilst there has been an increasing number of purpose built outdoor playgrounds around Singapore, the most requested photoshoot locations are still in the iconic landmarks in Singapore. So here, we have round up the Top 8 Most Requested Outdoor Locations For Family Photoshoots.
1. Singapore Botanic Gardens
Singapore Botanic Gardens is located in the heart of the city and is Singapore’re first UNESCO Heritage Site. The gardens is 82 hectares and stretches all the way from Tanglin Road to Bukit Timah Road. The lush greenery within its grounds and its historic buildings and structures (eg. The Band Stand) was the iconic location that many would love to be associated with in their wedding, couple or family portraits. That said, as the Botanic Gardens covers a vast area with multiple car parks and entrances, the photoshoots are often carried out in areas that is best suited for the family in question. We work with clients who are mobility challenged; clients with young kids, bigger extended families to arrive at a location best suited to their needs and wants. More images from Botanic Gardens can be viewed HERE.
2. Emerald Hill Conservation Area
The Conservation Area of Emerald Hill is located just behind the shopping strip of Orchard Road. These charming Shophouses with peranakan tlles, ornate doors and metal grills were former homes to the wealthy peranakan community. Further, as we mentioned previously, Singapore is a city within a garden. You would still be able to capture some greenery within this area.
These intricate details add a different dimension and colours to the portraits. More images HERE.

Hart took photos of our family recently, and we were so impressed with his great demeanor and artistic eye. He is great with kids, and he even managed to get our 18 month old grumpy baby to crack a few smiles. Each setting he picked for the photos was really lovely. Very happy with our experience!
Hart was great on our family photo shoot – we had quite a large crowd to accommodate (with family visiting from overseas etc.) and an 18 month old toddler. As you know, toddlers are never predictable but Hart was excellent working with our daughter and managed to engage with her quickly and kept her “interested” and captured all her many facial expressions. It was a fun session with both an indoor and outdoor shoot and the entire family had fun. The ordering process was also very simple/easy and all online, with the products delivered to your home.

It was Christmas and there are lots of amazing display and light but even without the festive, Marina Bay looks amazing…
This is the second shoot with Joanne’s family and it was a very relaxing and fun experience…

Who Need Mini Family Photoshoot?
First of all, I know that many of you always look at your friends’ photos and probably think. “There is no way we will put ourselves through all the stress spending hours posing in front of the camera.“
First of all, Jessica Bernard felt exactly the same (see her thoughts below)… Josh is 6.5yo and because, Ella who is 2.5, literally hate sand and grass in her shoes while Ella also simply isn’t a morning person.
Similarly, if your family dynamics has more or less the same. This article may be something you should keep reading on.
One thing for sure that we all know is having your memories captured is not only important, it is probably the only way to show you and your family really existed.
Of course, unless you are on Interpol most wanted list or some exclusive people who feel fine to be forgotten once you leave this world, you got to really have your photos taken once in a while. Even more so especially when you have young kids.
Typical Excuse #1
I get it, it is always those few pounds… let me burst your bubble… are you ready…?
It will only get worse…. Just think about last weekend.
Did you have one extra drink that you shouldn’t? An extra slice of pepperoni pizza that you shouldn’t eat?
As a result, unless you are someone who workout real hard regularly; or someone who is either blessed with great genes or is a breatharian, chances are, it will get worse.
Similarly, one of my client waited 6 years… guess what? the weighing scale kept showing increments!
Yes yes, as a professional, yes read PROFESSIONAL, i will light you better so you shave off a few pounds, then capture you in the right angle, to shave a few more pounds… you will be laughing so hard now and glad you did it today… I ain’t a miracle worker, but of course I know a thing or two to make you look better than real life.
Now, you are probably going to tell me that your husband is going to kill you to spend the money… Times are bad, yadi yadi yaa… or he says he just hates being photograph…
Totally understand… try this…Why do you think I am behind the camera all the time? Because I try to avoid the camera at all cost (pun intended)?
I hate it as much as your husband. In fact, I used to fight with my mother who always wanted our family photos taken. Now, I know I do it for my children. My 3 boys whom I love dearly is going to have some pictures of me with them too!
Then you are going to tell me that your kids just hate it every time you take that iPhone out and take their photo.
Short answer is, you can pretty much leave it to me with the kids. I have my way around them. All you need to do is (pretend) to be happy and bring lots of smiles. Oh… no no, I don’t mean really pretend… but you know, try to lah! It will be easy I promise.
So if you are those who like quick and fuss free experience, a mini session at East Coast Park will be your answer for those grandparents at home and precious memories for your own family too.
So to sum it up Mini Family Photo shoots Are:
- Affordable (yes your husband is probably going to nag less. It is certainly not cheap but you know affordable compared to the usual value associated with your memories),
- Quick (for those who never have time),
- East Coast Park (best place in Singapore, says me!) and last but not least,
- I will be the monkey for your children. Means you don’t have to deal with them for at least half an hour. Yes… good thing come in small bite size.
“Its too good to be true!“… and it is… because it is only going to last for a very limited time as good, affordable things usually don’t come often or stay very long.
So its a mini date session, I don’t mean dating me, I mean to schedule a date for your mini session for your family who everyone including yourself hated to be posing in front of the camera.
How Mini Family Photoshoots Work?
It is a promise that you won’t have to pose, hence, guidance is provided.
As a result, I won’t tell you to tilt your head left or right, but I am going tell you to squeeze your kids from time to time or to throw them up and down (for some overdue exercise) and to run with them as well as turning them upside down from time to time or simply chase them down the beach. Simply, spend time, create precious memories with your children.
Finally, You will be sweaty, you will get lots of sand in your shoes, between your toes, you will probably get yourself a little wet, but hey… as results, your kids will remember this great time you spend with them. I will be there just to capture it, probably the way you never thought it was possible.
Above all, who needs a perfect pose model in your family album, so, you can be sure that I am looking for everyday mum and dad who is willing to spend some time with their little kiddos playing wholeheartedly and have their memories captured at the same time.
We recently did an East Coast Mini Shoot with Hart – our first ever family photo session. My husband and I are not very comfortable in front of the camera, while the kids have a tendency to ham it up the second they see the camera – no easy, natural photos for us… or so we thought!
The mini shoot is a great option for those who may not be keen on having their photo taken – because it’s outdoors you don’t feel too fake or posed, and it enables you to interact with your kids and each other in an unforced way. It’s also over so fast that the kids don’t have a chance to get bored, they’re having too much fun!
The three things that impressed us the most:
1. Hart’s manner is so lovely. He’s so relaxed and we were all instantly at ease for the session, we interacted with each other as usual while he gave minor directions or responded to our requests. He’s particularly great with kids, and instantly put my 6 year old son at ease. My stubborn 2 year old resisted his charms initially, but he won her over by encouraging her to look for shells on the beach. The result – gorgeous, candid photos of my kids being themselves.
2. My husband was reluctant to do the photo shoot – he wanted the photos, just didn’t want the awkward photo session – but has since commented that he was amazed how much it didn’t feel like a photo shoot. It just felt like our family, hanging out with Hart, who just happened to have a camera.
3. I can’t stop looking at the photos! The light and composition is wonderful, and he’s captured some brilliant expressions from both my children. I got teary when he first sent them through (same day as the shoot btw!), and it’s so special to have some photos of the whole family – previously the only photo of all of us was a selfie!
From a reluctant, camera-shy family, we are now total converts to the family photo session, and will definitely be booking another mini shoot with Hart in the future.
