Newborn Shoot Preparation
When you’re pregnant, especially for the first time, it can be hard to imagine what it is going to be like to have a baby, let alone prepare for a newborn photo shoot.
The first two weeks are intense, but a little preparation will help make sure the photos from that special and unique time are ones you will enjoy for years to come. Tomato Photo is all about helping you preserve your precious memories.
Although there will be individual portraits, newborn photos don’t just have to be of your baby. Here are the 5 favourite variations of newborn shoot in one session.
We highly recommend planning on photos of the whole newly expanded family at this special time. And yes, that includes you! Your inclination may be to avoid being in the photos, but we encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to be photographed with your baby, even though you may not be feeling at your best.
In years to come, you and your child will be glad to have these early photos, and you’ll want to include your partner, too. Most importantly include any siblings as well. They will be pleased to be included in the shoot and your newborn will be excited to see how little his or her older siblings were back at the time of the birth.
Do you want to do birth announcements? How about framed prints, or wall canvases. Set aside a budget; planning ahead makes you more likely to actually follow through, even in those busy first months. If you’re planning on sending birth announcements, arrange the theme and cards now to save time after your baby is here!
If you have a special outfit in mind for your baby’s first photo shoot, pick it and set it aside it now! You might want to bring a couple of options in case one doesn’t fit well.
Focus on outfits with special meaning, but if you don’t have anything in mind, don’t worry. Your baby will look great without clothes or wrapped in a blanket. If you have a special blanket, toy or family heirloom, pack them, too. Maybe you have a silver rattle or other keepsake from when you were a baby, or a hand-knit blanket from a special relative. Plain but textured blankets work great in photos, either in muted or bright colours, but avoid busy patterns if you can.
Don’t forget about yourself! You don’t have to get all dressed up. A simple white shirt or black T-shirt will work great along with your favorite pair of maternity jeans. A beautiful necklace and some simple earrings can add a special touch. Don’t feel you have to wear make-up, but if a little make-up will go a long way to making you feel confident in front of the camera.
If your spouse, partner or other children will be in the photos, talk with them about what they will be most comfortable wearing. Keep it simple and don’t aim to get too dressed up. If you keep it casual and comfortable, everyone will be more relaxed. Don’t worry about having everyone match either. Just lay out all the outfits together on the bed to look and see if anything clashes. If it looks good to you, it will look good to you in the photos too.
Remember the more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your baby and the rest of the family will be, too. Enjoy this opportunity to bond and start out a lifelong tradition of captured moments.
Newborn Photography of the Haren Family
It is always a joy to be included as part of joyous moment in people’s life. Be it a birthday, wedding, or arrival of a newborn.
I have seen Fredrik and Elaine for the since 2011 to record their growing family. It all started with 1 and now baby #3. Newborn Photography is always a beautiful way to preserve memories for your little newborn so they can understand how they look like when they grow up.
Home or Studio?
For the Haren Family, all their shoots are done at their home. Most clients prefer to do the newborn photography at home for the simple fact that it is definitely more convenient for the parents. Everything the baby and mother needs is well within reach; elder siblings are also more at ease at home.
Natural Light or Flash for Newborns?
For sure, I started my career in newborn photography with natural light. However, with Singapore’s cloudy weather, unpredictable torrential rain and unknown amount of lighting conditions at clients home, I started to blend natural light with flash to achieve my newborn shots. I am so happy I am no longer at the mercy of weather when it comes to doing newborns photoshoots.
On the day of this shoot, it was dark and raining outside. It was also dark inside the house. With the combination of flash, I have the flexibility of control lighting during newborn shoots. Adding some flash in dark environment enables me to achieve the images that are becomes cleaner and crisp. Details of the image are able to withstand scrutiny even when its printed up to 50 by 80″.
What About Siblings?
As usual, while I photograph little newborns, the siblings would be running around, throwing tantrums just like any other day. I am blessed that kids love me and I love kids. I have my way with kids when it comes to photography. Things naturally fall into place and the perfect image would be captured at the right moment and right time.

What Are The Considerations?
Whilst it is important to like the style of newborn baby photography before committing to booking a newborn photographer, it is also equally important to know that your photographer have the expertise in being able to read and handle young children and newborn babies.
At the same time, be technically sound to produce the image quality of a professional that not only is beautiful on screen, it has to be able to print well.
Lastly, the newborn photographer would need to consistently deliver the whole experience of the newborn photoshoot.
The above are the top considerations that our clients are looking for while researching for a newborn photography studio.

Clothing, busy background and colour objects can take away from the moment of the photo. The black and white images allow your brain to focus only on the main element of the photo and the emotional message is more easily conveyed as our brains become more perceptive and focused on the images core itself. Taking away distractions gives you a focused image that is often more powerful and spectacular.
You’ll See Light Differently
With outdoor lighting in particular, you will miss out on that golden afternoon glow but you will also gain a more focused shot. The shot will lead your eye to focus more on the direction, quantity and quality of light in the black and white shot. As a photographer learning how to read and play with different elements of light in this way is a fantastic skill that helps play up emotion in the shot. The relationship between the starkness of the light and dark can be more interesting to shoot than the regular colour shots. Light and the relationship with my subject (and the shadows that form) as well as other complementary elements of the individual become the focus, rather than the colour of elements in the frame.
Looking at someone’s face, or into their eyes, without the distraction of color can provide a stronger emotional connection to the subject. It’s not necessarily always the case, but if like me, you often feel more connected to a person in a black and white image over a color image, this could be the reason why. With color gone, it’s purely about the connection you have with the subject. The color of the trees and shrubs, buildings and lamp posts are all irrelevant as the focus becomes the emotional bond between the embracing family.
Its A Classic
One of the most common reasons people want to shoot in black and white today is because it lends a certain timeless quality to the images. This is because we still think of black and white as being a throwback to the photographic past. Of course, it is in terms of black and white was much more prevalent before color, but this is still a great reason to shoot black and white. Black and white never seems to fade from being fashion forward and its seen as an elegant and sophisticated choice by many of my clients.
It Amplifies Your Use of Space
Negative space – the areas of the frame that have nothing in them, are easier to showcase and highlight when shooting black and white. This relates back to minimizing distractions from not shooting in color. You tend to focus on light and dark areas of the frame – and their inter-relationship. Playing with negative space is also useful in separating your subject nicely from the background and give added depth to the image. Black and white can help to highlight a shape and form or pattern in the image that might be overlooked in a full colour image.
To Highlight Beauty and Skin Tones
It doesn’t matter what race, color or background you happen to be – black and white photography provides wonderful tonal range between the deepest blacks and the whitest whites. Garishly colorful makeup is no longer distracting. Pigments, discoloration and distracting elements of the skin can become less obvious. I particularly love this when I am emphasizing a newborns skin and wrinkles. Its that light bath or glow if you like that separates the baby from everything else and proves to shape our attention directly at the newborn.
