Beachy Backdrops are the Best

Visiting the beach is always a great bonding activity so here are some tips for the ultimate family outdoor photos.

Take photographs with the sea as your focus.

We love shots when the kids and parents are frolicking in the waves and enjoying the sea breeze.  Don’t be afraid to get in around knee deep and splash your family in fun and entertaining moments.

Ready Set Action!

Any photographs with your pets or local wildlife in them alludes to freedom and fun. Capture these moments with your child, and the memories would be for life. Shots of children playing with birds or their beloved pooch display the innocence and fun of childhood.  For Mums and girls remember to have spare hair-tie on hand in case its gets too windy.  You don’t want your face to be covered in hair in all your family shots

Write it in the sand…

Visually document their writing skills their young handwriting and snap away at the proud pose when they realize  they can spell their names.  Include all the families name to mark a moment in time when you were all together and playful

Use the sunrise to enhance your image

Take advantage of silhouette shots using the natural lighting and shadows.  Use all the colours of the sunrise to create dimension and depth to your family photos.  Remember your sunblock for any outdoor shoot!

5 Reasons For Doing A Pet Family Photoshoot in Studio or On-Location

Over my long career of photographing families, the term pet family photoshoot kept popping up.

Maybe because Pet Photography has established itself as another genre of its own and the thought of combining pet photography and family photography started to manifest itself.

I have had many families asking me if they can include their pet dog or cats in their Family Portrait Session. The answer would definitely be “Sure! Bring them along!!!”

Not only are your dogs a huge part of your family, they are also one of your key members. They are companions, they are playmates, they have strong bond to the family members. They certainly add to the dynamics to any family shoot.

I got to learn about the term ‘fur kid’ only couple of years ago through an incoming email asking if I welcome ‘fur kids’. That was when I had to google to find out what it meant… LOL..

The only pet I had was having and breeding lots of fish when I was a kid. Running around drains catching worms to feed my large supply of fishes. As I left home to further my studies in Australia, I kept an eastern long neck turtle.

Looking back, it seems that the type of pets I have seem to be scaly water type pets. I haven’t had a furry type of pet like a dog, cat, rabbit or guinea pig before. So, the term ‘Fur kid’ just didn’t resonate at that point of time.

Nevertheless, as I began to photograph more couples or families with pet dogs or cats, I began to sense the deep connection between the pets, the baby and the family.

The interaction between the baby and the dog are clearly phenomenal…. almost like best buddies.

The laughter and excitement sparkles on the children’s eyes as they interact with their favorite pooch. These interactions are so natural that it helps any photographer capture that perfect shot in any pet family photoshoot. Furthermore, a pet is a great photographers assistant as they relax the environment and create love and connection between the family.

So here is the top 5 reasons why you should be doing your next family shoot with your pet in our studio, at your home or on-location.

1. They are part of your family.

Let’s face it, way before you have your own child, your pet is very much part of you and when the baby came along, you introduce the baby to your pet just like you introduce your baby to the rest of the family and extended family. You love your pet and they are part of your family.

2. You want to remember them.

Humans will out live their pet. Dog’s life is rather short, we make comparison of 1 year in dog’s life is very much about 7 of human’s. So by the time they reach 5-6 years old, they are mature and some what less active as we saw in some of the breed.

While we celebrate our life, we want to make sure every part of our life is being captured, that include your pet. After 10 years of photographing thousands of families, I can always feel the sadness when they point out the pets that they used to have and lost them because of old age.

3. Kids love to play with them.

One of the way to get the kiddo to be engaged for the duration of the family photo shoot is to introduce their pets. They love them and you know kids’ love are boundless and I love watch them play, I love the connection that they share and I love they treat their pet just like their best buddies.

Be sure to have those captured and have them for your kiddo when they grow up. Sometimes, the pet understand the child more than we do and they often cheer up the child. So bring your pets for the next family photoshoot.

4. You love them as much as your own child.

You know deep down, they hold that special place in your heart when it comes to pet. They don’t talk back, they are there to cuddle with you when you are sad, spending time with you when you are alone and they are faithful to you as their family too. Perhaps you have told them secrets that you never told anyone because pets are the best at keeping your secret because they don’t share the same language as human.

5. It is part of your children’s memories.

It is especially true if you had your first child and there is no one else… just mummy, daddy, me and my pet. This is a shared bond and love between them.

Have it for your child… after all having your family photoshoot done with your pet is an activity that promotes bonding and connection. It is a perfect activity when it comes to having the memories that can be passed down to your child.

Warm and cosy studio with more than sufficient props. No pushy sales tactic, just go in, get comfy and start shooting. Hart was really accommodating with our pets and his finger was quick to capture the shots before our pets started getting fidgety. I would highly recommend pets/kids shoot with him as he is super patient and easy-going.

Hart was super understanding and he knew how to grab the attention of my 2 little nieces during our family shoot. He also managed to capture some great shots of our energetic Jack Russell Terrier in his studio as well! Its our first time doing a family photo shoot with him and definitely will not be the last.

Family Shoot at Marina Bay – Indoor & Outdoor

One of the beauty of having the family portrait shoot done at Marina Bay is the appeal of the beautiful Marina Bay area with the ultra modern cityscape, The urban look to the image as well as the comfort of aircon inside the mall. This give you the outdoor and indoor in the same location.

It was Christmas and there are lots of amazing display and light but even without the festive, Marina Bay looks amazing…

This is the second shoot with Joanne’s family and it was a very relaxing and fun experience…

As a photographer, we also need to conduct ourselves in a manner that don’t cause much public nuisance so we make the work of security guard a lot easier… respect others and others will do the same.

Portraits – We Keep It Classic, A Style That Never Dates

Since 2008, Tomato Photo’s portrait style had been people focused, classic, simple, natural and beautiful. Our focus is always you, your family and your children

Keeping it Simple, or KIS principle that we call it.

It is important to recognise the beauty in every person that we photograph and with decade of experience, we learn how to work with our clients to draw out their best.

One of the reason why we do well is perhaps, I love meeting people, I am intrigued by kid’s curiosity, their behaviour, why they do what they do. I observe, I pre-empt and I anticipate. That’s how I get to to capture the moments and expressions that parents didn’t know existed. It surprise me from time to time as well, as creating images is more or less like a second nature, such as breathing…

We had such a fantastic experience with Hart – he was so relaxed and easy going and the session was really enjoyable. My husband and I were amazed at how quickly our very shy 2 years old warm up to him. We are absolutely thrilled with the quality of the images and would highly recommend. Danelle Slattery

I find beauty in people’s laughter, expression, body language, connection, etc. I learn all that from comments from my clients… they often say something like, oh… that is so her! oh, i love that “look” and I love when they do this…

In fact, my photography skill grow every time I listen to my clients. Capturing what they hope to remember drive me to the pursuit of images beyond thought. It is that simple.

Mother and child

We find value in simplicity and it is a classic example of how we create our images.

Most clients tell us that there is something in our photos that they like but not quite sure what… They feel comfortable looking at the photos, they can relate and they look real. We presume what they mean is that’s how their happiness “feel” like.

Its life little things that makes people smile more than biggest ticket item that money can buy.

From my initial inquiry to the enjoyable photoshoot experience and the prompt delivery of the final photos, my journey with Tomato Studio was nothing short of extraordinary. The team displayed exceptional professionalism, offering a truly personalized and seamless experience. They answered every question I had and prepared all the outfits for me in a snap. I was able to book my session and receive the final photos in just about 1 week! I was a little nervous going into the studio as it’s my first photoshoot ever, but Master Photographer Hart’s calmness, patience and easy-going personality made me feel very comfortable. I had also brought my chihuahua to the studio to be photographed, and even he was calm around Hart! The studio was also very clean and cozy. Hart guided me on how to pose and identified angles that accentuated my best features, which was very helpful for a first timer like myself. He was also very patient during my multiple outfit changes and really put me and my dog at ease, making the whole experience really fun and efficient. Hart’s proficiency extended to the post-production phase, as he was able to edit all the photos within 2-3 days! They came out so stunning, and I am so thrilled with the results that I have been wholeheartedly recommending Tomato Studio to all my friends. I look forward to working with Tomato Studio for my next milestone photoshoot, confident in their ability to deliver another exceptional photography experience.

Worked with Hart for the first time this month for a newborn and family shoot. Hart was able to communicate with my toddler who cooperated on posing photos with us and our newborn. The photos that came out were really nice, candid, and professional - everything that we expected from the shoot. The session also was not draggy and everything was done quickly with really good photos. The photos were also well edited quickly and we received the preview within a day. Thank you Hart!

Hart is just brilliant with kids. He’s able to engage and quickly make the kids feel comfortable with him, that they actually follow instructions… most of the time. He’s also extremely gentle with newborns and gives you every confidence he knows what he is doing. The result? Amazing family photos!

Did a multi-generation shoot of 25pax with Hart, a seemingly daunting task that Hart handled with such ease. He gave us time to relax and settle, and took effort to know each of us so he could suggest placements and positions. He is deft at handling kids, bringing out their natural smiles, and patiently coaxed a crying toddler into smiles. He may not be the cheapest but he brings out the best of the subjects, through a very enjoyable experience.

Hart strives to know your preference and style right from the beginning which is great as it helps clients to envisage the type of outcome they would like to achieve. The entire experience was fast, smooth and comfortable as you would expect from a very experienced photographer. Importantly, the outcome is awesome and is something I would cherish for many years to come. Thanks Hart!

School Holiday Thoughts….

For parents who have children in “big school” as my kids call it… we understand the challenge of waking up in the early morning darkness… and at times dealing with tantrums before school… and many of us feel that it is a groundhog day over and over until the “School Holiday”…

As parents, we thought, YES!!! we have an hour more to sleep and kids will behave themselves and give us, parents, that 1 precious hour of “sleep”.

Guess what?

They wake up earlier than school days and start their “party”…

I am sure many of you can relate…

One thing strike me very hard this morning is, yes, our children may feel “liberated” from school… but for some reason, I felt that I have not done much for them… and understandably the guilt sets in…

Lets face it, as much as we think we want to spend MORE time with them, they have their own things going on… so the time we spend with them actually rather limited.

Yes, we can bring them out for things that makes them happy… however, looking back… what do we have to remember of them? how do they want to remember us when they grow up?

Like investment, it only pays off many years down the road.

Imagine we never take those first steps in investing in their memories… I call it, emotional bank account… How do we bank in those emotion bit by bit and allow them to remember us when they have their own family… in short, what kind of role model are we hoping our children to become?

Lucky for me, I have the skills to capture what I want to remember of them and of course how I want them to remember their childhood as well as with us…

Sure, in the digital age, we have those softcopy which we hold dearly… personally, I don’t remember much of what I shoot a month ago… My answer to my own need is to have them display…

These are some of our memories with our children…

I work so hard every single day and I love to come home and surround myself with happy memories of my children… I don’t think it is too much to ask…

Give me a call if you would like to make use of my skills for your family too…

Regards,

Hart Tan
