Treasure the Time through Photography

family_photo_studio_sg

Parents, Grandparents and elders have stopped me over the  years to tell me the same thing: cherish every moment. It goes too fast. One day they are little and the next, they’re not. They say it while staring fondly, wistfully, at my kids. Watching their faces, I can tell that some part of them is replaying a memory of when their  own children were small and needed them more.  This for me is the reason why I love what I do as a photographer.  I am able to help parents capture these moments that fly by in an eternal print and frame.  We can savor our memories of our young children by looking loving at an old photograph of them just being themselves.  Photographs give you that personal insight into their state of mind and capabilities at that specific time.  A photograph inspires our memory, brings back a particular smell or feeling we had in that moment and for every parent that instant insight is priceless.

Parents come back each year for that annual shoot time and time again as they recognize how the fast the special moments of their little ones childhoods fly by.  Photos help you treasure and relive these moments as you reflect back on the growth and achievements of your children over the days, months and years.

Perhaps the best quote I have heard this week is that “they are older today than yesterday and time is not slowing down.”   All we can do is preserve time and this is what Tomato Photo does best.

No Forced Smiles Here…

As a photographer I often get asked “but can you make my kids smile?”.   Sure, we can do this through playing and interacting in a natural way, but I always tell parents that the heart and soul of your child is in other facial expressions too.  Natural photography that captures moments and feelings is not about that posed cheesy smile, its about what is behind the eyes and the connection the eyes make with the camera.

As a photographer and parent I am drawn to the eyes and soul of the image.  Often the piercing stare is what really captures the true personality and traits of any child.  Its that connection that the child makes with the camera that the parents will be drawn to and thus framing .  Capturing all moods is crucial to documenting and keeping your memories alive, as parents we know that our children are not always perfect tidy smiling angels, they are little people with thoughts and ideas of their own – so why not capture this through photography.

Gone are those cheesy 80’s family portraits where children sit on the knees of the parents or not he floor next to a grandparent.  Fast forward to the present and family photography is about capturing a particular moment in time experienced by the individuals in the snap.  As a photographer who takes and sees thousands of photos, its those natural moments captured without telling children to smile and say “cheese” that really make for amazing family portraits

Remember next time you take a photo of your little one, just tell them to be themselves to continue to take part in the game or activity they are engaged in and then take your photo.  Capture the essence of your child not the unrealistic posed model of them.

Senior Portrait with the Santillos

It was late, dark and rainy before the shoot… usually, in this kind of condition, the shoot will be postponed. However, time isn’t a luxury that the Santillo’s family have. So we went ahead and hope the rain will quite down a little.

For the most part of the individual shot of Michaela, it was really dark and wet and glad it finally brighten up for a good 15 minutes so we can squeeze in the family session too.

I am glad that we have gotten images that the family love…

East Coast Park – a familiar site

There are family who prefer to be guided through the session, there are family who prefer to be left alone and there are family who prefer a bit of both. It is up to the photographer to realise what type the family fall into.

Sometimes being the observer brings a lot of joy in preserving memories for a family. The moments are spontaneous and there are a lot to capture usually. However, it will always challenging to capture something that is meaningful rather than shoot whatever moves.

I love the randomness in this shoot, through the randomness, it seems to define this family that is so dynamic but simple… I simply love it.
